About Amish Country Hikes

The Ohio Amish Country isn’t just farms and roadways. We’re blessed to call home to a delectable quadrant of American paradise with endless hidden gems of walking trails filled with opportunities for bonding, horseback riding, experiencing covered bridges, and birdwatching.

Let’s get into our list of Ohio Amish Country hikes.

Norma Johnson Center

  • Location: 3645 Conservation Dr, Dover, OH
  • Difficulty: Easy

We can’t think of many other East Central Ohio spots with as many pine trees galore as the Norma Johnson Center.

The spot spans 130 acres and tons of trails to enjoy with your loved ones. Built on pillars of conservation and preservation, staff at the Norma Johnson Center regularly host environmentally friendly events and programs.

You might instill strong, responsible habits by introducing your kids to the trail “spring cleaning,” where volunteers assist in keeping the trails neat and tidy.

Camp Tuscazoar

  • Location: 6066 Boy Scout Rd NE, Dover, OH
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Zoarville, Ohio, is home to one of the most bustling green spaces in the region. We love a trip to Camp Tuscazoar for the ample trails, which are used for leisurely hikes, mountain biking, and running.

Pick your piece of outdoor heaven! Camp Tuscazoar has separate horseback riding, biking, and walking trails that meander past a river, rolling hills, and educational signs with QR codes to learn about the local ecology.

Then, there are all the juicy historical checkpoints. Stop by the Stockade and marvel at the area’s first stockade from the 1960s. And once you’re tuckered out from the hike, check out the W.C. Moorhead Museum. Explore each artifact, uniform, and book echoing the camp’s unique history.

Atwood Lake Park

  • Location: 9500 Lakeview Rd, Mineral City, OH
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Looking for a scenic trail with grassy meadows and sparkling views of the water? Make your way to Mineral City, Ohio, to Atwood Lake Park. While Trail Forks deems the trails “easy,” our clients noticed a few steep inclines that gave them a challenging yet solid workout!

Still, the trails are perfectly groomed, which makes them a rewarding 1.5-hour stroll for couples or the entire family. Just keep your dogs on a leash if you bring your furry friends!

Tappan Lake

  • Location: 84000 Mallarnee Rd, Deersville, OH
  • Difficulty: Hard

This is our call-out to the fitness gurus on our blog. If you want to try your hand at challenging hills and steep inclines, Tappan Lake’s loops and trails will give you a run for your money!

Harrison County is home to one of Ohio’s best birdwatching hotspots. You’ll break a sweat, but at least you can enjoy the chirps of ruffed grouses and even catch sight of a bald eagle! But the best part has to be the 47 miles of delectably quaint shoreline circling around the lake.

Take a quick stroll through the 0.6-mile Cabin Beach Trail, or take the whole group on a challenge with the 3.8-mile Fox Trail.

Southside Community Park

  • Location: Co Hwy 24, New Philadelphia, OH
  • Difficulty: Easy

Did someone say “butterfly garden?” How would you like to take your special someone to a dedicated area of pollinators to attract gorgeous, multi-colored butterflies?

Southside Community and Dog Park is a relatively new addition to New Philadelphia’s natural areas. This time, the city went all out. Football and soccer fields, a dog park, and a dedicated amphitheater for local events are all included.

Now, for the trails. Fresh green trees line the groomed trails and deliver juicy May apples for hikers to pick at their leisure. Loops are pretty straightforward and simple enough to complete, even if you’re traveling with family.

Dundee Falls

  • Location: 8525 Dundee Wilmot Rd NW, Dundee, OH
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Imagine walking 3.4 kilometers through a fertile forest and coming across a charming little creek. You keep walking and encounter a series of small, flurried waterfalls flowing reliably atop mossy cliffs in Dundee Falls, Ohio. Some waterfalls soften throughout the year — but not the ones in Dundee Falls. You’ll find this trailhead just west of the Beach City Wilderness Center.

The sight is enough to calm your racing mind, helping you truly savor nature’s beauty and enjoy your trip to East Central Ohio. And if you like to hunt? The lands are plentiful with deer and game for you to catch a meal to eat back at the rental.

Word for the wise? Don’t venture through this trail if you feel nervous about improvising. Some patrons report a lack of proper signage and overwhelming mud in certain areas of the trail. But for the adventurous hiker, that’s all part of the fun.

Tow Path Trail

  • Location: With a handful of trailheads to choose from, consult this map to find the most convenient one for you.

Lily pads and cherry blossoms — what more can you ask for on a scenic hike? Northeastern Ohio’s Towpath Trail delivers them tenfold and other hiking pleasures.

Picture the lovely sound of scarlet tanagers, blackbirds, and yellow-rumped warblers; in one of Amish Country’s most pristine wildlife areas! Don’t mind the tapping; that’s a woodpecker toning his majestic beak on one of the thousands of sycamore trees.

On an easy hike, noticing all of nature’s sounds and treats is even easier. Despite being 101 miles long, the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail is relatively smooth, without too many steep areas.

East Central Ohio has plenty to offer families with little ones. Our clients love taking their young kids on this hike before retreating back to one of our traditionally furnished and oh-so comfortable rentals!

The Wilderness Center

  • Location: 9877 Alabama Ave SW, Wilmot, OH
  • Difficulty: Easy to hard

Some of our favorite trail maps in Ohio are at Wilmot’s Wilderness Center. Why? For starters, it’s sheer versatility. If you’d prefer a laid-back stroll, opt for the Sigrist Woods Trail — its elevation gain is only 10 feet.

But if you want more of a sculpting workout, the 127-foot-elevation pond trail is a worthy choice. Savor the views of Wilderness Lake or marvel at the spring flowers along the trails.

Remember, no charcoal grills are permitted. Instead, you’ll have to take the grill party back to Your Family’s Place rentals, which are fully equipped with a stocked kitchen and barbecue.
